Verge Motorcycles October Update

October 2020 Update

2020 has been a year to remember for many reasons.  The year started positive for us at Verge Motorcycles.  We began our European tour at the Utrecht motorcycle show in the Netherlands followed by the IMOT show in Munich.  Visitors of the shows loved seeing our first motorcycle, the TS, and enjoyed the opportunity to pick our brains about who we are and what we want to become.

Then, everything came to an abrupt halt with the global outbreak of Covid-19. People and businesses have been struck hard by this event, and Verge Motorcycles are no different, especially being a start-up on the verge of releasing our first motorcycle.

Our supply chains were frozen and we had to accept the fact that we would be delayed for the foreseeable future.  We quickly realised that we could not operate at 100% capacity and had to go in to damage limitation mode.

Reluctantly, Verge Motorcycles temporarily shut down operations, but our dedicated team kept working from home, voluntarily.  This truly illustrated that every member of the team are 100% committed to building Verge Motorcycles in to a respected brand within the motorcycle industry.

Even though our progression towards our production date has been in flux, we adjusted our focus towards aspects of our company, and motorcycle, that had full control of.  Key work was completed on improving our revolutionary motor technology even further, poising it to become the most innovative drive-train on the motorcycle market.

The second focus was on fine-tuning our wiring harness design.  The ultimate goal of this work has been to maximize reliability and enhance the riding experience of not only the TS model, but all future models that

EU agrees 12-month "end of series" extension for 2020 Euro 4 models

EU agrees 12-month "end of series" extension for 2020 Euro 4 models

Brussels based international motorcycle industry trade association ACEM has welcomed the positive votes of the EU Council and Parliament on the revision of Euro 4 "end of series" provisions.
"The motorcycle industry in Europe welcomes the recent decision by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament to endorse the European Commission's proposal adapting the rules on end of series vehicles in EU Regulation 168/2013".

The amendment will give motorcycle dealers and companies across Europe, who have seen sales of Euro 4 units affected by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a 12-month extension to 31 December 2021 to sell their stock of Euro 4 vehicles before a delayed final implementation of Euro 5 on January 1 2022.
The proposal, supported by the two legislative bodies, will cover only the vehicles that were in stock at the moment when national lockdowns were introduced across the EU. More specifically, the amount of vehicles benefiting from the revised end of series measures will not exceed the number of Euro 4 L-category vehicles in stock in the EU on 15 March 2020, which was estimated by industry experts at around 550,000 units.

Antonio Perlot, ACEM Secretary General: "The motorcycle sector thanks European Commission's President von der Leyen as well as Commissioner Breton and his team at DG GROW for their decisive political dealership and swift response to this crisis."

Under EU type approval rules, all Euro 4 motorcycles needed to be registered before the application of the environmental Euro 5 step on 1 January 2021. This requirement was impossible to achieve as a result of the drop in sales caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
EU type approval rules foresaw a flexibility mechanism called "end of series", which allowed manufacturers to continue making available on the market, register or enter into service a limited part of their stock of Euro 4 vehicles. However, this flexibility clause was not sufficient to address the problem of extra vehicle stock created by the sudden outbreak of the virus.

The political agreement reached by the two European legislators will help motorcycle companies and dealers to better face these troublesome times.
It is worth emphasizing that the amendment to the end of series provisions in EU Regulation 168/2013 will not affect the original timeline foreseen for the introduction of the Euro 5 standard, i.e. 1 January 2021, for existing moped and motorcycle models type approved before 1 January 2020.

Commenting on the political agreement reached by the EU institutions, Antonio Perlot, ACEM Secretary General, said: "ACEM welcomes the positive vote of the Council and the European Parliament on this important legislative file. The amendment to EU Regulation 168/2013 will help those manufacturers in need of specific support and will help to bridge the gap towards Euro 5. The new rules will also provide a much needed 'safety net' for the entire sector, including downstream dealerships, and will prevent the unnecessary scrapping of Euro 4 vehicles.

"Over the coming months, ACEM, but most importantly - as since day one - the sector's national associations will continue working constructively with public authorities to ensure that the new end of series rules support manufacturing in Europe and dealerships in these challenging times."

S&S Indian Challenger Wins Inaugural King of The Baggers

 S&S Indian Challenger Wins

Inaugural King of The Baggers

Kudos to Drag Specialties - after the initial COVID-19 driven postponement, the welcome King of The Baggers race initiative at the famous (infamous?) Laguna Seca Raceway went ahead on October 24 as part of the MotoAmerica GEICO Motorcycle Superbike Speedfest at Monterey.
Featuring 8 laps of one of the world's most iconic race circuits ('Corkscrew' and all!), as a fun-laced showcase for the premium performance 'Bagger'/H-D Touring model market it was an idea that deserved to succeed, and succeed it certainly did.

None more so than the S&S Cycle prepared Indian Challenger raced by former MotoAmerica racer Tyler O’Hara, taking a dominant win thanks to a 600 lb weight reduction, boost of the stock 122 bhp to around 150 bhp and a race tuned S&S exhaust, among the other tweaks!
O'Hara brought it home ahead of the Vance & Hines/Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Standard in second - ridden by Hayden Gillim (who in 2019 came very close to earning the MotoAmerica Supersport Championship), followed by the Roland Sands prepared Indian Challenger raced by Frankie Garcia in third.

Press Release from the organiser:

SAVE THE DATE: CUSTOMBIKE-SHOW 2021, Messezentrum Bad Salzuflen, vom 3. - 5. Dezember 2021

 Euer Messeteam der CUSTOMBIKE-SHOW

Harley-Davidson Inc. Escapes $3m Air Pollution Reduction Sanction

Harley-Davidson Inc. Escapes $3m

Air Pollution Reduction Sanction

Reuters reported that a United States judge approved a revised settlement with Harley-Davidson Inc. over excess emissions - after four years of wrangling, the new settlement dropped the originally included requirement that Harley spend $3m to reduce air pollution.
In August 2016, Harley agreed to pay a $12m civil fine and stop selling illegal aftermarket devices that caused its vehicles to emit too much pollution. It also agreed to spend about $3m to retrofit or replace wood-burning appliances with cleaner stoves to offset excess emissions.
In July 2017, the Justice Department cited a new policy by then U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and in proposing to drop the $3m mitigation project set in motion an ongoing review of the penalty by a government auditor.

A Screamin' Eagle "super tuner"

A wood burning stove

Finally, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan approved the settlement over the objections of environmental groups and a group of ten states, including New York, Illinois, Maryland, Vermont, Washington and Massachusetts.
While the earlier agreement "containing the mitigation project might have been the 'best' resolution of Harley-Davidson’s alleged violations, the Court cannot say that the decree lodged before the Court is not within 'the reaches of the public interest," Sullivan wrote in approving the consent decree.
The settlement resolved allegations that Harley sold about 340,000 "super tuners," enabling motorcycles since 2008 to pollute the air at levels greater than what the company certified.
Harley-Davidson did not admit liability and has said it disagreed with the government, arguing that the tuners were designed and sold to be used in "competition only." Even though the settlement had not yet taken effect, Harley-Davidson has said that since August 2016, it sold only tuners certified by the California Air Resources Board and halted sale of the tuners in question and destroyed tuners returned by dealers.
