AHDRA 2020 Schedule

AHDRA Schedule, Sponsors Coming Together

Following the news that the AHDRA series is to make a comeback in 2020 (Kudos Bill Rowe!), a schedule and class line-up has been published.
The season opens at the traditional nitro Harley headquarters of Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina in May, then moves north to Numidia, Pennsylvania, 
before hitting the Midwest at Cordova, Illinois.


Then it is on to the Sturgis Dragway (August 10-11) and into Canada for the end of August at the Napierville Dragway in Quebec. After a four-week break, racing resumes at the Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, Georgia, and stops at the Orlando Speed World Dragway in Florida before the season wraps up at Gainesville, Florida, at the end of October.

AHDRA is owned by Pulse Marketing, the Hellertown, Pennsylvania-based motorsports promotion company run by veteran drag racer Rowe and his family.

AMD World Championship 2020 - Over 70 Bikes From 20 Countries Already Slated to Compete

Following news last month about the growth of the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building's Official Affiliate event program, as we enter 2020, the year of the 14th World Championship ('AMD' XIV), there is news of further growth in the number of pre-entries for the October 2020 Championship.



At the time of writing there are still nine months to go before entries for the 'AMD' close, and there are already up to 60 'Builders' and over 72 bikes from over 20 countries (including four builders and their bikes from the USA) slated to compete in the five classes at INTERMOT Customized, Cologne, Germany, (October 6 to 11).
This is well above the comparable stage for any prior year, with 53 confirmed entries and another 19 Affiliate event winners receiving automatic entry - either for their Affiliate event winning bike or a new build – 2020 looks set to be another banner year. Plus, if 2018 is anything to go by, more than half the bikes this year will have been built specifically to make their global debut at the 'AMD'.



This year will see the first significant refinements to the World Championship class structure for a decade. The primary class from which the competitors (and selected prior competitors and VIP judges) will choose their 2020 World Champion will again be the Avon Tyres Freestyle class, and Avon are again offering free tires to builders for competing bikes.
The Modified Harley-Davidson class has been renamed Modified American V-twin class to allow Indian models that meet the criteria to compete head-to-head with Harleys for the first time.
The start-point must be a 1984 or later Harley-Davidson, or 'Gilroy', 'Kings Mountain' or later/current Indian engine and frame as the basis. The stock frame geometry must be maintained; the only modifications allowed are smoothing of welds and other moldings, sheet metal additions, tab and/or bracket relocation or removal and arising smoothings/ moldings (such as exhaust bracket relocation for example).
Swingarm/rear end changes, of any kind, including replacement swingarms, are permitted; fat or skinny rear end conversions are permitted; as is frame or rear end lowering or raising, provided the basic stock frame geometry is unchanged. Case internals can be replaced, along with cylinders, heads and internals. Turbochargers, superchargers, NOS kits etc. are permitted. Screamin' Eagle/JIMS and Gilroy Indian era S&S engine cases are permitted. Frames/cases can be from two different models (from the same manufacturer).
The Retro/Modified class is for any modified motorcycle with any drivetrain on any chassis configuration that is based on a pre-1984 engine, styled to have the appearance of a motorcycle manufactured prior to 1984. Use of some contemporary parts/design elements is permitted.

Dmitry Golubchikov of Zillers Garage was the first Russian winner of the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building in 2018 with 'Insomnia', a Yamaha SR 400 based masterpiece.


Entirely new for 2020, the Modified Street Custom class is for all manufacturers/brands with a 1984 or later major OEM volume production engine and frame as the start-point. The neck may be cut to rake or stretch the frame, and hard tail sections and wide tire alterations are acceptable, but the bike must be a two- or three-wheel motorcycle configuration.
Previously two separate classes, Café and Street Performance have been combined as a class designed to showcase customs where the primary intention of the customizer is to improve the street use performance of a motorcycle, and showcase the customizer's streetable performance engineering, tuning and handling skills and techniques. This class is open to all or any kind of motorcycles, of any platform or drivetrain, air-cooled or liquid-cooled (or even alternative energy) - 'metric', Whitworth/AF and SAE measure motorcycles, all kinds of performance engineering and enhancement/tuning techniques, including supercharging, turbocharging, NOS, fuel injection etc., with vintage or modern café racer, drag or sport bike styles among those permitted.
Also new for 2020 are a series of 'Cross Class' Awards - including the Detlev Louis sponsored Public Choice (as selected by public ballot) and New Energy Vehicles (NEV) - to be chosen from entries utilizing electric, hybrid, hydrogen or fuel cell power, or any other energy sources considered to qualify.
INTERMOT Customized fills Hall 10, one of the largest at the Cologne Exhibition Center complex, and one of the six halls in use for INTERMOT this year, with the 'AMD World Championship' as the center piece. Set-up day is Monday October 5th; Press Day is Tuesday 6th; Trade and Preview Day is Wednesday 7th; Public days are 8th - 11th October, with the live streamed awards ceremony at 3:00 pm on Sunday 11th.

Ondank de zeer succesvolle TRIUMPH PREVIEW EVENTS, waarbij Triumph haar nieuwste modellen in een vroegtijdig stadium toont aan dealers, hun VIP’s en consumenten, bleef de vraag uit de markt voor aanwezigheid op de Motorbeurs toch bestaan. TRIUMPH zal aanwezig zijn in (importeurs) hal 7 met een selectie van de nieuwste 2020 modellen als: Rocket 3 R, Rocket 3 GT, Tiger 900 Rally Pro, Tiger 900 GT Pro en de compleet nieuwe Street Triple-serie (RS/R & S). For the second year running, the Panigale is the world's best-selling superbike. A record number of advance orders for the new Streetfighter V4, with deliveries to begin in March 2020
Borgo Panigale, Bologna, 14 January 2020 – Ducati Motor Holding closes 2019 with 53,183 bikes delivered to customers worldwide, nudging last year's figure of 53,004 bikes even higher.

A major contribution to this result came from the Panigale: with sales totalling 8,304, it retains the market leadership established in 2018 and confirms its status as the world's best-selling superbike with a market share of 25%.



Two new bikes introduced in 2019 - the Hypermotard 950 and Diavel 1260 - racked up sales of 4,472 and 3,129 respectively, doubling the overall volumes achieved in 2018 by previous versions. The Multistrada family performed equally well, scoring a 3% increase compared to 2018 (thanks also to the addition of the 950 S and a revamped 1260 Enduro); deliveries totalled 12,160, the best sales performance since the Bologna-built multibike made its debut sixteen years ago.

Sales figures for 2019 have reinforced Ducati's position at the premium end of the motorcycle market.

What's more, order books for the new Streetfighter V4 are bulging - more than 1,700 are already on order - and deliveries will begin in March 2020".

This expansion plan will continue this year in order to further improve the world-wide network coverage and offer our fans a growing premium experience.”


Sales in Italy continue to grow, confirming the country as Ducati’s number one market. sales totalled 9,474, a 3% improvement on 2018 and a 20% increase over the last three years. In the United States, Ducati deliveries totalled 7,682 motorcycles, down by just 2% despite the continuing negative trend which saw the market shrink by 7% compared to 2018.
Brazil (+20%), Spain (+10%) and France (+8%), however, performed exceedingly well. China, a country where the Italian brand is particularly appreciated, continued the upward trend of recent years and is, with 3,200 motorcycles sold (+12%), now the Bologna-based bike manufacturer's fifth most important market.



This positive end to 2019 allows Ducati to look into the future with confidence. For 2020, the product range is now even more complete and dealerships will soon be taking delivery of the long-awaited Streetfighter V4. The Panigale can - in addition to the introduction of the new V2 - also count on a major upgrade to the V4 that will boost performance and enhance rideability.
For globetrotters and those who want to enjoy long-distance adventures in outstanding comfort, the Multistrada family sees the arrival of the new Grand Tour and the extension of the warranty to 4 years.

Last but not least, the Ducati Scrambler range - which saw the new 800 Dark presented at EICMA - will see the introduction of a new model in the coming months.

Enters into Force January 1st 2020 for all New Motorcycles and Mopeds in Europe


As of 1 January 2020, all new type-approved motorcycles and mopeds sold in the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) will have to meet the new Euro 5 environmental standard, replacing the current Euro 4 specification.
For existing moped and motorcycle models type-approved before the 1 January 2020, Euro 5 will become mandatory as of the first day of 2021. This brings the pollutant emissions of L-category vehicles (i.e. mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles) to the same level as Euro 6 cars.

In a release dated December 16th, ACEM, the Brussels based international motorcycle trade association in Europe said that "technical innovation in the motorcycle industry has played a key role in progressively lowering vehicle emissions. Since the introduction of the Euro 1 standard for motorcycles and mopeds in 1999, pollutant emissions have been drastically reduced. Combined emissions of hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) have gone down by 96.6%, whilst carbon monoxide (CO) emissions have been reduced by 92.3%.
"Under the new Euro 5 standard, tailpipe emissions of mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles will not be allowed to exceed 1,000 mg/km of carbon monoxide (CO), 100 mg/km total hydrocarbons (THC), 68 mg/km non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), 60 mg/km of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and 4.5 mg/km of particulate matter (PM). These Euro 5 tailpipe pollutant emission limits are the same as those of Euro 6 for cars.
"The new Euro 5 standard that will replace the previous one (Euro 4) will become mandatory for all new type-approved motorcycles and mopeds as of 1 January 2020. Some niche segments (i.e. enduro and trial motorcycles, three-wheeled mopeds designed for utility purposes and light quadrimobiles) have been granted additional lead time. These niche products will have to comply with the new Euro 5 tailpipe emissions limits as of 1 January 2024.


Antonio Perlot, ACEM Secretary General: "From a supply side perspective, vehicle technology has been instrumental in improving the environmental performance of motorcycles."

"Durability provisions and evaporative emission levels are equally becoming more stringent. Another important innovation is the progressive introduction of a second stage on-board diagnostic (OBD), allowing advanced identification and flagging of malfunction and deterioration of emission control systems."
Antonio Perlot, ACEM Secretary General, said: "From a supply side perspective, vehicle technology has been instrumental in improving the environmental performance of motorcycles. ACEM members have invested heavily in research and product development to develop Euro 5 compliant motorcycles equipped with technologies such as 3-way catalysts with oxygen sensor controls, complex electronic engine management systems, advanced fuel injection and variable valve timing and lift technologies.
"As a result of this, the environmental performance of Euro 5 motorcycles will be equivalent to that of Euro 6 cars. ACEM sees this fitting within the vision of the recent European Green Deal of achieving less polluting transport, especially in cities, and further enabling the contribution of our range of vehicles to a multimodal transport system."

BMW Motorrad heeft het klaargespeeld om tien jaar overall marktleider te worden. Een prestatie die door geen enkel ander land is geleverd in de bijna honderd jarige geschiedenis van BMW Motorrad. Bovendien werd het 2002-verkooprecord van 2018 al op 25 oktober 2019 verbroken. Op de laatste dag van het jaar eindigde de teller op 2.302 registraties. 123 meer dan de directe concurrent en nummer 2 in de markt Yamaha.

J&P Cycles' Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Shows (UBCBS)

Staged at the Jacob Kravitz Center during the New York Progressive International Motorcycle Show (December 6 - 8), the second of eight 2019/2020 season J&P Cycles' Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Shows (UBCBS) series saw George Stinsman of Chaos Cycle (Shirley, New York) scoop the win in the Freestyle Class with 'Chaos Cycle Café' - featuring an exhaust swingarm, custom gas tank, oil tank/fender, wheels and Chaos Cycle triple tree (valued at $40,000).
Celebrating its tenth successive year, the J&P Cycles sponsored UBCBS series is expected to feature some 300 plus custom motorcycles, with more than $70,000 up for grabs in cash and prizes. This year’s categories include Custom Classic, Custom Street, Freestyle and People’s Choice.
Judged by a panel of industry experts, winners in each city along the IMS tour will be invited to compete in the championship round taking place February 9, 2020 in Chicago for a chance to be crowned “King of the Builders.”
“Custom building is one of the most creative outlets our industry has to offer, and the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows offer the ideal platform for builders to showcase their work on a national stage,” said Bob Kay, Director of UBCBS. “Not only are the motorcycles strikingly ornate, but it’s an incredible opportunity for the motorcycle enthusiast community to learn about and appreciate the unique story behind the creation of each build.”

Runner-up: Ryan Coligan was selected as runner-up with a 2019 custom Turbo 100 featuring a turbocharged blow-through carb set-up, 100 ci Merch motor and Evo bottom end and Twin Cam top end. Coligan built the custom frame, hosting all-aluminum bodywork and fuel/oil cells. The fuel/oil cell is found under the seat, featuring an extremely low 14" seat height, with a 26" front and 15" rear car wheel with custom hub and a 230-width tire and a Hurst shifter from a 1969 Camaro.

Winner: Evan Favaro with Speakeasy Motors and painter Taylored Auto Body won with a 1991 BMW R100RT. Café racer style, the motorcycle features a stainless steel exhaust through a handmade custom tail section, custom louvered belly pan, stripped frame CAN bus wiring, Bluetooth proximity key ignition, custom Cerakote wheels by Prodigy Performance, a seat by Fish Bros, and all electronics operate off a smartphone app. The motorcycle is valued at $25,000.
Runner-up: Dell Battle with Dangerous Designz and painter Brad H Design were selected with a 1991 Harley-Davidson Sportster.

Runner-up: Brian Ballard with A&J Cycles and painter Dave at Slag Kustom were selected with a 2019 Triumph Scrambler XE. The motorcycle is based on Steve McQueen’s 1961 Triumph Desert Sled, featuring a custom rear fender, undertail, number plate and light bracket by Slag Kustom, a custom 2:1 exhaust, prototype A&J Cycles TFT dash relocation bracket, custom folding license plate bracket, vintage Harley-Davidson SX125 front fender, lighting upgrades from Denali and Kellermann, valued at $20,000.

As voted by IMS attendees, Rob Adams and painter Ryan Kelly were selected as the People’s Choice winner with a 2019 RA Chopper featuring handbuilt tins, Rolling Thunder frame, a Sugar Bear front end, Ultima 113 engine with a six-speed transmission and custom metal flake paint, valued at $40,000.
