1. Introduction

that can materially affect the interests of shareholders) Harley-Davidson stated that …
The European Union has enacted tariffs on various U.S.-manufactured products, including Harley-Davidson motorcycles. 
These tariffs, which became effective June 22, 2018, were imposed in response to the tariffs the U.S. imposed on steel and aluminum exported from the EU to the U.S.
Consequently, EU tariffs on Harley-Davidson motorcycles exported from the U.S. have increased from 6% to 31%. Harley-Davidson expects these tariffs will result in an incremental cost of approximately $2,200 per average motorcycle exported from the U.S. to the EU.

Harley-Davidson believes the tremendous cost increase, if passed onto its dealers and retail customers, would have an immediate and lasting detrimental impact to its business in the region, reducing customer access to Harley-Davidson products and negatively impacting the sustainability of its dealers’ businesses. 

Therefore, Harley-Davidson will not raise its manufacturer’s suggested retail prices or wholesale prices to its dealers to cover the costs of the retaliatory tariffs. In the near-term, the company will bear the significant impact resulting from these tariffs, and the company estimates the incremental cost for the remainder of 2018 to be approximately $30 to $45 million. 

Harley CEO Matt Levatich is on record as stating that he believed that import tariffs on steel and aluminum would hurt Harley-Davidson and other U.S. manufacturers

On a full-year basis, the company estimates the aggregate annual impact due to the EU tariffs to be approximately $90 to $100 million.
To address the substantial cost of this tariff burden long-term, Harley-Davidson will be implementing a plan to shift production of motorcycles for EU destinations from the U.S. to its international facilities to avoid the tariff burden. Harley-Davidson expects ramping up production in international plants will require incremental investment and could take at least 9 to 18 months to be fully complete.
Harley-Davidson maintains a strong commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally. Increasing international production to alleviate the EU tariff burden is not the company’s preference but represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the EU and maintain a viable business in Europe. Europe is a critical market for Harley-Davidson.

In 2017, nearly 40,000 riders bought new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in Europe, and the revenue generated from the EU countries is second only to the U.S.

Harley-Davidson’s purpose is to fulfill dreams of personal freedom for customers who live in the European Union and across the world, and the company remains fully engaged with government officials in both the U.S. and the EU helping to find sustainable solutions to trade issues and rescind all tariffs that restrict free and fair trade.

Harley-Davidson will provide more details of the financial implications and plans to mitigate the impact of retaliatory EU tariffs during the company’s second quarter earnings conference call on July 24, 2018, at 8:00AM CDT.

It is characterised by an exclusive livery featuring the three colours of the Italian flag on the nose fairing, fuel tank and passenger seat cover, inspired by the 2008 Monster S4RS Testastretta Tricolore. The special colour scheme partners perfectly with the prestige seat which is embroidered with the 25th anniversary logo. The gold coloured frame and forged Marchesini wheels with W spokes in the same colour are another distinguishing feature of this Monster, which also has numerous other prestigious details machined from solid, such as the mirrors, frame plugs, handlebar end weights and the petrol cap, which is a standard fitting. The articulated brake and clutch levers as well as the plate holder are also in aluminium, while the front and rear mudguards, the keyhole cover and the exhaust heat guard are in carbon fibre. The Monster 1200 25° Anniversario  also comes with a bike cover, decorated with the particular logo of this special limited edition.

As for the chassis set up, the Monster 1200 25° Anniversario boasts the best anyone could wish for on a Naked sports bike. The tubular steel trellis frame and single-sided swing arm in aluminium are paired with a fully adjustable Öhlins fork with 48 mm diameter stanchions, an Öhlins rear suspension which is also fully adjustable, as well as a steering damper also supplied by the Swedish firm. The first-class braking system is made up of two 330 mm diameter Brembo discs paired with Brembo M50 monobloc callipers. The rear 245 mm diameter disk is matched with a Brembo caliper.

The Monster 1200 25° Anniversario  is equipped with the latest evolution of the Testastretta 11° DS which guarantees high levels of power and torque as well as fluid and full delivery even at low revs and a manageable accelerator response that's always gradual, ensuring maximum riding fun.

The twin-cylinder Monster 1200 25° Anniversario puts out 147 hp at 9,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 124 Nm at 7,750 rpm.

Thanks to the constant attention paid by Ducati to quality and reliability, the Testastretta 11° DS engine of the Monster 1200 25° Anniversario guarantees long maintenance intervals - the regulation of the valves, for example, is due every 30,000 km.
The impressive electronic package features three different Riding Modes (Sport, Touring and Urban), as well as an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) which supplies information to the ABS Bosch Cornering and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) systems. Thanks to these high level electronic systems, which also include Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Ducati Quick Shift Up and Down (DQS) for swift gear changes without using the clutch, the Monster 1200 25° Anniversario guarantees authentic Ducati performance that is manageable and suitable for all riders, as usual also providing a high level of active safety control.

The colour TFT instrument panel provides all the necessary information and allows the rider to regulate the Riding Mode settings through a pleasant and user-friendly interface.

In addition, the headlight is equipped with a DRL (Daytime Running Light) system, which ensures perfect daytime visibility and allows for the motorcycle to be seen immediately.

The Monster 1200 25° Anniversario will be available in the UK towards the end of the year and has an SRP £17,390 OTR.

A motorcycle famously ridden by silver screen icon Steve McQueen in The Great Escape is set to star in the Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elégance at Salon Privé on Thursday 30th August.
The 1962 650cc TR6R, which is presently on display at the Triumph Factory Visitor Experience at Hinckley in Leicestershire, has not been shown publicly since this celluloid classic was made in 1963. It is just one of a mouth-watering array of iconic motorcycles which will be vying for honours at Blenheim Palace across three classes.

An accomplished amateur racer on 2- and 4 -wheels, McQueen begged the film’s director John Sturges to let him perform the famous stunt which saw his character Virgil Hilts attempt to flee his pursuers by jumping across barricades and barbed wire from Germany into neutral Switzerland.

The film’s insurers wouldn’t allow it, so the task fell to the King of Cool’s great friend and sometime team-mate Bud Ekins instead. World War 2-era machine would not have been up to the task, so as many as three TR6Rs were aged to look the part and used for the rough stuff. The stunt entered into legend in an instant and helped cement the film’s legendary status.
The McQueen Triumph will be competing in Class B, with judging taking place on August 30. It will be on general display on Friday, August 31.

This weekend: Chopper Freakers Band PONT-A-MOUSSON Chopper Fest, 
June 23rd 2018 - June 24th 2018

There's plenty of custom stuff going on in France! This weekend, the 4th annual "Chopper Fest" will hit the Centre Michel Bertelle in Blénod-les-Pont-à-Mousson, just south of  Pont à Mousson (PAM) on the Moselle River which itself is situated south of Metz. 

Originally part of the "Get a Rigid" club at Mecrin, the "Chopper Freakers Band" was founded when the Mecrin Club joined an big traditional American Motorcycle club and soon found more friends of building extraordinary custom motorcycles, which has become a trademark of the club members and the event, which is held on the 4th weekend in june.  

In typical French-style, the show will have US-cars, customizers, Kustom culture indoor show and plenty of good food! Pon à Mousson itself is always worth a visit, with the ruins of the "Mousson" castle offerng a superb view over the Moselle valley and the surrounding countryside. AMD World Championship Set for Record Bike Entries and Visitor Attendance in October?

With 17 weeks to go (at press time) until entries close for the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building (Cologne, Germany, October 3-7), the response to what will be the 13th ‘AMD’ has been universally positive. Entries are running way ahead at this stage in the planning cycle compared to prior years – either in Europe or in the USA – with over 80 bikes slated to compete already.

There is always ‘churn’, but the field is comfortably some 20 or 30 bikes ahead of the kind of pre-entry levels that would normally be expected at this stage and normally yields an eventual showing of some 70 to 75 or so bikes.

The primary reason appears to be the ongoing change and decline being seen in several of Europe’s historically strong custom shows and the increasingly widespread acceptance that INTERMOT ‘Customized’, where the AMD World Championship will be staged again (Hall 10 at INTERMOT/Cologne Exhibition Center, October), is now firmly established as the primary international custom motorcycle industry Expo in the world.

This year sees the Hall 10 footprint expanded as INTERMOT ‘Customized’ expands to occupy the whole of the lower level of what is the largest hall at the Cologne Expo Center, the only one of the original double-deck halls left, resulting in a satisfyingly retro and chic environment that works well for the custom motorcycle industry’s exhibition values.

Hall 10 is located adjacent to the three primary public entrances to the Cologne Expo Center and in 2016 attracted some 150,000 visitors - this year the public days are expanded to five from four days.
With more than five prior World Champions already confirmed among the 2018 competitor community and bikes already slated to compete from some 26 countries worldwide, the Hall 10 attendance looks set to be another all-time record for a custom bike show at an international motorcycle industry expo.

In the interests of promoting craftsmanship and innovation, the AMD World Championship only features five classes, the most famous of which is the now almost universal Freestyle class concept first introduced to the motorcycle industry by AMD in 2004 - this is the class from which the competitors choose who will represent them as World Champion for the next 24 months. The other classes recognize the impacts that custom builders’ platform and design and engineering decisions have on custom outcomes to include the prestigious, immensely popular and highly influential Retro Mod class; Modified Harley-Davidson; Street Performance for cutting-edge high-performance engine and chassis work and a platform-diverse Cafe Racer showcase.

Most of Europe’s major V-twin industry parts and accessory distributors are already confirmed – Motorcycle Storehouse, Custom Chrome Europe and Zodiac International among them – with several of the major OEs again taking additional booths to showcase their customization programs.

‘Saving Time & Money whilst having an enjoyable commute’ - the main reasons why people choose to commute by a motorcycle or scooter

Riding to Work has been shown as having a significant impact upon a persons’ well-being, which was highlighted in a recent survey conducted to coincide with Ride to Work Week, which started yesterday.
With commuting being a leading cause of stress from factors such as the misery of congested roads and overcrowded public transport, there is a heightened importance for employees to have a stress free commute and for employers to support this.
The aim behind the survey was to identify why people ride to work, and how they would like to see riders supported in transport policy.

Why ride to work?
Over 400 riders shared their opinions via the survey. While ‘enjoyment’ topped reasons to ride to work (93%), 64% said ‘saving time’ was important whilst and 46% said they did it to ‘save money’.
In contrast to popular belief, the weather appears immaterial as nearly 60% of riders claimed to ride through all seasons and weather conditions.

How should riders be supported?
There was clear consensus on what needs to be done by transport planners and local authorities to help riders. They ranged from more secure parking, improved road surfaces and lane widths to allow safe filtering, which is legal in the UK.
Additionally, there was strong support for greater access to bus lanes and access to Cycle Superhighways, which several respondents said are largely empty for most of the day. Access to cycle advance stop lines at junctions also received a regular mention as this unfairly discriminated riders.

As many towns and cities around the UK introduce cycle lanes, there is a worrying trend toward the narrowing of normal traffic lanes, narrow lanes increase risk to riders whom are trying to filter, many respondents suggesting road planners should think again.
How would you commute if not by Motorcycle or Scooters?
Of the 249 respondents who replied to the question ‘how would you get to work if you couldn’t ride?’, 60% said they’d swap to a car, 20% said they’d use public transport and 9% said they’d walk or cycle. 5% said they would not be able to get to their current job at all.

Tony Campbell, CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Association, which conducted the survey for its Ride to Work Week Campaign said:
“With the increasing number of commuters turning to Motorcycles and Scooters to travel to work, and the large rise in Small Parcel & Food delivery by Powered Two Wheelers, Government both national and local must think carefully as to how this can be encouraged and accommodated safely” 

“The Government have set some clear goals around congestion and clean air, to ignore the contribution that Motorcycles & Scooters can offer appears a bit of a paradox”

Cyril’s Story

Cyril Huze grew up in Paris, France. At the age of 18, he left home to stake his independence. He self-funded his higher education and earned a masters in marketing. At age 24, he starts gaining experience working for American advertising agencies based in Paris handling accounts for Schweppes, BP Oils, BMW cars.

By his 30s, he had already started his own ad agency and was chosen to handle the national advertising accounts for McDonald’s, Volkswagen, 3M, Hertz, among others. Cyril art directed and wrote copy for all his own campaigns and made a name for himself by winning advertising awards and having his work published in hard cover books and exhibited at the museum of advertising.

Meanwhile, his passion for everything American had grown steadily since his teenage years: “I was part of the first generation of Europeans to be deeply exposed to American culture: Rock’n’Roll, Hot Rods, and Harleys. America fueled my dreams and imitating its culture, for me, was a way of moving beyond my parent’s generation, to forge my own identity.  As a teenager I was both rebellious and romantic. I identified with James Dean and with his rebellion. He was my idol, provided the escape route that I needed so much.  My first week-long visit to the US in ’79 was professional but emotionally exhausting. I felt like I was starring in a film in cinemascope. Everything I’d read about in books, heard on radio was there. It was as if I had come back to the country I had lived in during my youth. It was love at first sight.”

By the mid-80s, a passion for America had grown so strong that Cyril willfully abandoned his successful career to make the United States his home, proclaiming “Life’s too short not to live your dreams.” As quickly as he could, he seals his new life by choosing to become a naturalized US citizen.

In the nineties, his passion for Harley-Davidson grew stronger than everything else in his life and he decided to enter the business of building motorcycles. Like most builders, Cyril started by customizing his motorcycles and his friends’; it was more as a hobby than as a profession. All his custom motorcycles went on to beat the pros several years in a row in Daytona and Sturgis with memorable custom motorcycles: “Deanager”, “Harley Davidstones”, “Glamour Girl”, “Blues Brothers”, “America”, “Graffiti” etc… His first client gives him a huge budget for the time to build him three motorcycles. Because of Cyril’s unique style and attention to detail, his motorcycles get featured all over the world. By the turn of the millennium, the industry had acknowledged him as a Master Builder.

With a looming recession in the US that would start reeling the business of custom motorcycle building, Cyril recognizes the huge influence of the internet in our daily lives. He sees a business opportunity to offer custom motorcycles news in an intimate digital format. In 2006, the daily “Cyril Huze Post” was born. Determined to continue making his passion financially viable, his online publication becomes profitable within the first year. For the next 12 years, his work took him on travels across the US and abroad, covering the industry and sharing the passion of custom motorcycles with an online community across the world.

Cyril never gave up on his dreams and published until the very end of his life. His last words to me were: “Je n’ai pas vécu ma vie, je l’ai rêvée.” “I didn’t live my life, I dreamed it.”

He was buried in the strictest intimacy.

Suzuki introduceert Café Pack voor SV650(X)A
Suzuki Motoren introduceert het Café Pack voor de SV650A en SV650XA. Hiermee wordt de sportieve uitstraling van de compacte en lichte V-twin extra versterkt.

De Suzuki SV650A is een populaire allrounder met een levendige Dual Spark V twin, een laag gewicht en een wendbaar rijgedrag. De SV650XA voegt daar nog unieke designdetails en clip-ons aan toe die een sportievere rijpositie en een nog directer stuurgedrag mogelijk maken. Beide modellen zijn per direct leverbaar met het Café Pack, waarmee de uitstraling van een stoere caféracer extra wordt versterkt. Het pakket bestaat uit een verstralerset, een uitlaatwrap en een korte kentekenplaathouder inclusief verlichting. 

De onderdelen van het pakket vertegenwoordigen samen een waarde van € 545,-, maar Suzuki Motoren levert het Café Pack voor de Suzuki SV650(X)A voor de gunstige prijs van € 439,-. Daarmee profiteren klanten van € 106,- voordeel. 

Krachtigste en zuinigste in zijn klasse
De Suzuki SV650A en SV650XA zijn voorzien van de 645 cc Dual Spark V twin motor die op zestig punten is verbeterd. Het benzineverbruik van 1 op 26 is lager dan dat van de concurrenten, terwijl het vermogen is toegenomen tot 56 kW (76 pk). Daarmee behoren de SV650A en SV650XA tot de krachtigste én zuinigste V-twins in deze klasse. Bovendien zorgen slimme systemen zoals Easy Start en Low RPM Assist                                                           voor optimaal rijplezier.

Begin 2016 trok Shoei het doek van haar gloednieuwe J.O, een trendy ogende jethelm die dankzij een heerlijk vintage karakter naadloos aansluit op de heersende retro hype en daarmee goed in de smaak viel bij het grote publiek. En precies die J.O heeft nu model gestaan voor een nieuwe exponent in de Shoei line-up: deze EX-ZERO. 

Geen jethelm inderdaad, maar een integraalhelm, die met zijn klassieke lijnenspel echter wel het gedachtengoed van de J.O in ere houdt. En mocht het design van de helmschaal je enigszins bekend voorkomen, dan kan dat, de EX-ZERO is namelijk geïnspireerd op de befaamde EX-lijn die begin jaren ’80 van de vorige eeuw bijzonder populair was.

Klassiek dus, maar niet antiek. Want hoewel de vormgeving met onder meer de oldskool ventilatiesleuven in het kinstuk misschien anders doet vermoeden, is de EX-ZERO van voor tot achter een high-end helm, gemaakt van hoogwaardige materialen en voorzien van doordachte details. De fiberglas buitenschaal (in drie maten) bijvoorbeeld, is gemaakt conform Shoei’s inmiddels bekende AIM-technologie, waarbij meerdere lagen glas- en organische vezels zorgen voor een heel rigide constructie in combinatie met een laag gewicht. Uiteraard is het interieur volledig uitneem- en wasbaar, waarbij de EX-ZERO ook is voorzien van een uitneembare centerpad. Dankzij het nieuwe Shoei Personal Fitting System (SPFS) kan de helm daardoor volledig individueel op maat worden gemaakt bij één van de geselecteerde officiële Shoei-dealers.

Verder heeft de EX-ZERO ook een licht modulair karakter. Zo is de helm onder meer voorzien van een geïntegreerd, in drie standen verstelbaar vizier, dat er naast de standaard heldere versie, ook in een getinte en gele variant beschikbaar is.
