Benelux H.O.G. ® Rally 2017 in Antwerpen

Benelux H.O.G. ® Rally 2017 vindt plaats in Antwerpen.

Norrtälje, Sweden, Saturday June 3rd - 43rd annual Custom Bike Show

43rd annual Custom Bike Show
Norrtälje, Sweden, Saturday June 3rd

Arguably the oldest and longest established custom bike show in the world, the 43rd annual Custom Bike Show staged by Swedish riders’ club MC Norrtälje will again be staged at the coastal city of Norrtälje, an hour north east of the Swedish capital Stockholm.

An established and iconic event in Europe’s annual calendar, the unique one-day Custom Bike Show is a fixture at the first weekend of June (Sweden’s annual national holiday weekend) and attracts thousands of visitors from as far afield as Norway, Finland, Denmark and the Baltic countries, as well as the length and breadth of Sweden itself.

Last year saw over 200 bikes in 8 classes compete for vendor prizes that included a RevTech transmission donated by Custom Chrome Europe (CCE) and an expense paid package for the winners to compete at the next AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building at INTERMOT ‘Customized’ (in October 2018), paid for by the members of Twin Club MC.

This will be the 13th year of affiliation for the Custom Bike Show, making it the longest established ‘AMD Affiliate’. In total over 10,000 visitors are expected, and with more than 5,000 bikes descending on what is a tranquil former port city on the Swedish coast that regularly throws its doors open and welcomes bikers from all over northern Europe, the city authorities at Norrtälje are among the most “rider friendly” in Europe.

Three separate judging systems are used to determine the winners, with a jury of industry professionals deciding on three World Championship affiliate prizes, with the competitors deciding the class prizes, and a Public Choice winner, sponsored by CCE. Last year saw a Bagger class added, which provided the Public Choice winner and Best Paint award.
Last year’s winning bike, selected by the jury, and which went on to compete in the Freestyle class at last year’s AMD World Championship, was a classic Swedish style ‘70s chopper with a 93” S&S Pan-style engine in a Swedish made UCC (Unique Custom Cycles/Gordon Rooth) 40-degree rake, 3” stretch rigid frame with a 4” over Springer front end made in Finland by Mr Moore Motorcycles.

Smith wins Sacramento Mile to give Indian a third podium sweep

American Flat Track Twins presented by Vance & Hines

Smith wins Sacramento Mile to give Indian a third podium sweep

The fifth round of this year’s 18-race American Flat Track Twins presented by Vance & Hines saw reigning Grand National Champion Bryan Smith bring home his No. 1 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750 to lead a third podium sweep for Indian’s 21st Century “Wrecking Crew.”

Staged at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds, the Harley-Davidson Sacramento Mile presented by Cycle Gear “witnessed both a rider and a manufacturer in action at the height of their powers.”
Smith and his fellow members of the Indian “Wrecking Crew”, Jared Mees (No. 9 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing Scout FTR750) and Brad Baker (No. 6 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750), “were again in a class of their own on Saturday night.”
After 25 laps Smith’s victory came by a minuscule 0.025-second margin over Mees, with Baker a further 0.05 seconds adrift in third. The win was Smith’s seventh in succession at the Sacramento Mile, and his third in a row this season.

After securing sole possession of the championship lead, Smith said “I played my cards just right. I sat back there, saved my tire, and went hard the last couple of laps.”
While he got pushed out of at least a share of the championship lead for the first time this season, Mees did manage to maintain his perfect 2017 podium streak with his runner-up result in Sacramento, saying “I’ve got to give a big shout out to my team. It was a good race, and it’s great to get another Indian sweep with these guys. It stinks getting second, but it’s great for Indian Motorcycles. I’m honored to be a part of it.”
Sammy Halbert (No. 69 Estenson Logistics Yamaha FZ-07) snatched fourth place by a narrow 0.050 second margin from quick-starting Jeffrey Carver Jr. (fifth on the No. 23 Carver’s BBQ Kawasaki Ninja 650). It was another disappointing weekend for Harley-Davidson and their XGR750R - Brandon Robinson was 9th, 14.32 seconds behind Smith, and Kenny Coolbeth Jr was 16th, having only completed 16 laps.
Next week, the American Flat Track will make the first of two 2017 doubleheader stops in Springfield, Ill., with Saturday May 27’s Springfield TT and Sunday May 28’s Harley-Davidson Springfield Mile I.

Biker Fest Italy

Biker Fest, Italy, May 18 - 21

The 6th annual Italian Motorcycle Championship will take place at the 31st Biker Fest in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Udine, Italy, on the spectacular Adriatic coast north of Venice, May 18 – 21.

The Italian Championship is the culmination of a 12-event network of custom bike shows held throughout Italy and promoted by Italian custom bike magazine Biker’s Life.

It will be staged again on the impressive Terrazza Mare, with over 602 bikes from across Italy expected to compete for top honors – including expenses paid entry to next year’s AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building at INTERMOT ‘Customized’, in Germany in October 2018.
Classes will include Freestyle, Modified Harley-Davidson, Metric, Streetfighter/Sportsbike, Cafe Racer, Scrambler, Bagger and Old Style classes, with the three ‘Best in Show’ winners receiving 1,000 Euro expenses towards competing at ‘AMD XIII’.

Last year’s winner was MC Cycles with “Avalon”, a beautifully modified and finished Harley-Davidson FXR, Energy Bike with “Ducati DSA”, an ultra-radical Ducati Monster 620, and PDF Motociclette with “Big Kahuna”, a 1927 Harley-Davidson JD 8-valve.
With a larger vendor presence expected at the event this year, an expanded additional “customizer” vendor area will be set up opposite the Terrazza (in addition to the usual vendor lot at Luna Park) with opportunities for builders and custom shops to present their work – last year this new feature was judged to be a great success.

Public attendance at last year’s 30th anniversary event exceeded 35,000 riders. Exhibitors included Custom Chrome Europe, Motorcycle Storehouse, Free Spirits, Italian suspension specialists Andreani and Bitubo, Asso Special Bike, along with motorcycle manufacturers such as Harley-Davidson, Indian Motorcycle, BMW, Honda, Aprilia, Ducati (Scrambler), Victory and Moto Guzzi.

Presenting sponsor this year is Bridgestone Tire.

"Old Iron – Young Blood" Draws Next Generation

Sturgis Buffalo Chip® 2017 Motorcycles as Art Exhibit
“Old Iron – Young Blood” Draws Next Generation
of Motorcycling’s Masters

A new generation is shaping the industry, and they are ready to show what they can do.

Sturgis, SD (May 4, 2017) An incredible group of young builders and artists who have been inspired by the iron stylings of previous generations will be creating new works that reflect the attitude and attributes of the present in the Buffalo Chip’s 2017 Motorcycles as Art exhibit, “Old Iron/Young Blood; Motorcycles and the Next-Gen,” curated by famed motorcycle photographer Michael Lichter. Forty builders under 36 years of age have accepted the challenge to build a custom masterpiece especially for this exhibit, each of which will be displayed atop elevated pedestals and lit with theater lights to better give guests an open view from every angle. The exhibition is free to the public and open in the Buffalo Chip’s Event Center 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 5 through Friday, Aug. 11. More information can be found at MotorcyclesAsArt.com.

Creating an exhibition themed around the next generation of builders and bikes ensures an incredibly diverse offering, from cafes to street trackers to old school choppers and modern customs. Some builders, such as Matt Olsen, Matt Walksler, Zach Johnson and Zach Ness, grew up in their own family’s motorcycle businesses, while others came into building when they were older, eventually starting their own commercial shops. Still others have day jobs and work on their bikes in home garages in what waking hours they have left.

“The 40 builders and 14 two-dimensional artists will come together as 53 creatives to examine just what this generation is interested in, what they are capable of and what is coming around the bend,” said exhibit curator Michael Lichter. “In addition to an age limit on the builder, each bike must be a new build completed within a few months of the show opening and many of the bikes will be ‘unveiled’ for the first time at the exhibition.”

Throughout the history of motorcycle customization, one can see that individual artists draw inspiration from his or her most impressionable moments, experiences which often mark both the timeline of their lives and of an entire generation. The old iron that returning veterans of the ‘40s twisted, stretched and chopped echoed the frustrations of a generation of GIs who were ravaged by war and yearned to be free. Today’s young bloods are creating bikes that are inspired by old iron, yet reflect the more calculated interests and accessible technology of the present. Though many define this generation as “Millennials,” the burgeoning masters of the motorcycle industry displaying their work in this exhibit have broken any constraints or negative stereotypes associated with the term.

“Michael has again put together an exhibit that explores the changing landscape of the motorcycle culture in a way that only the world’s leading motorcycle photographer could reveal,” said Rod Woodruff, Sturgis Buffalo Chip President. “We are witnessing the birth of a new generation of talent, the up-and-coming masters of an art. This exhibit offers the chance to simultaneously see the wave of the future and the influence of the past, an opportunity no biker should miss.”
