With Spring showing up early all over Europe, this is very good news for many motorcyclists in Sweden who like to carry their gear in tow.
"I hope that all motorcyclists who want to ride with a trailer are happy and pleased since we finally have a regulation which allows this", says Maria Nordqvist, SMC, who has been in charge of the issue for three years.
"It's feels incredible that the solution finally came. It's also a good start of the motorcycle season 2012. The motorcyclists don't need the bureaucracy and insecurity that come with asking for a special exemption. It also means that every rider saves €130," Maria continues. "The regulation states that the towing coupler must fulfil the demands laid out in the relevant EU directive. If there isn't any specification from the MC producer you can follow the specification from the towing coupler producer. For amateur built and rebuilt motorcycles you can either use a type approved towing coupler or use one that fulfils the control of SFRO, the Swedish vehicle builder association."
This is a departure from the previous systems, where users were required to produce towing weight figures approved by the motorcycle's manufacturer - data that almost never existed. It effectively banned trailers from being used on the road, for no good reason.
